The value and market dynamics of rhodium recycling

Jun 20,2025Reporter: DONGSHENG

Some rhodium scrap types have very high value in the recycling market. The highest value types are hydrogen fuel cell electrodes and aircraft coatings. This year, the world produced about 35 tons of precious rhodium metal. One-third of this rhodium comes from recycling scrap. This means the value of rhodium recycling will likely increase this year. But this does not mean the price paid for recycled rhodium will definitely rise. In high-tech materials, other materials can now replace rhodium. Because of this, the price for recycle rhodium might actually go down. Few companies globally recycle ruthenium. DONGSHENG is one of the strong companies in ruthenium recycling.

Common Scrap Materials for Rhodium Recycling

Rhodium is used in many areas as the same as the Ruthenium. These include medicine, chemicals, chip making, 5G base stations, and aerospace. Besides these, here are five common scrap materials for recycle rhodium.

1, Car Catalytic Converters: These clean car exhaust. They contain small amounts of precious rhodium metal.

2, Rhodium Catalysts in Chemical Plants: These catalysts help make acetic acid and methanol more efficiently.

3, Rhodium-Platinum Catalysts: These are found inside hydrogen fuel cells.

4, Used Rhodium based Catalysts from Hydrogen Production: Abondoned catalysts from electrolysis plants still contain rhodium that can be recycled.

5, Rhodium Targets in Research Equipment: These are used in synchrotron radiation machines and electron microscopes.

Rhodium Recycling Price Changes

The price for high-purity recycled rhodium powder has fallen. It now matches the lower global rhodium price of $76.38 - $83.33 USD per gram. Car catalytic converter scrap contains only a little rhodium. It doesn't have high recycling value. DONGSHENG usually does not recycle rhodium from this type of scrap. Electronic scrap contains slightly more rhodium than car catalysts. It can be recycled. But the price paid for recycling it is also low.

Fun Fact About Platinum Group Metals

Pure platinum is very soft. It can be easily stretched into a thin wire. Just one gram of pure platinum can be stretched into a wire over two kilometers long!
