1. Platinum and palladium based catalysts are used in VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) catalytic burners in offshore platform painting workshops and shipbuilding. They turn harmful organic gases into CO₂ and H₂O. Pt-Pd honeycomb catalysts convert over 98% of VOCs at 300°C. They work between 200°C and 800°C and can handle sudden temperature spikes up to 900°C.
2. Ruthenium (Ru) based catalysts are used in ocean renewable energy development to directly split seawater into hydrogen. The Ru-ZrO₂ catalyst can run stably in seawater electrolysis for over 180 hours. Even with very low amounts (0.1~0.4 mmol per 500g substrate), it still works very well.
3. Pt-Ni bimetallic catalysts are used in anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers to make hydrogen production more efficient. For example: the Pt-Ni₃N@V₂O₃ catalyst runs steadily at 500 mA/cm² and significantly boosts hydrogen production efficiency. It's good for large-scale hydrogen production from seawater.
4. Pt-Co bimetallic single-atom catalysts are mostly used for cleaning exhaust gases on ships and platforms, treating toxic VOCs like benzene and toluene. The Pt₁Co₁/CeO₂ catalyst removes 90% of benzene at 200°C (T90) and is better at resisting damage from water and sulfur.
Besides precious metal catalysts scrap, marine engineering produces many other types of precious metal scrap that can be recycled. This is because marine engineering covers offshore oil/gas drilling, shipbuilding, seabed mining, ocean energy conversion, and environmental protection. So, industrial precious metal scrap from these areas is also marine engineering scrap.
Examples include: coated titanium anodes and nickel cathodes from electrolyzers used for seawater hydrogen production, metal anodes and cathodic protection systems for ships and water treatment filter screens used in wastewater treatment.
