Iridium stays stable in extreme conditions. This makes iridium recovery very hard to do. Iridium melts at 2450 degrees Celsius. It is very hard (6.5 on the Mohs scale). These features make it irreplaceable in advanced fields. They also make iridium recovery technology a big challenge! Iridium is a key material in industry. It is just like the CPU in a computer. Every company in the world that can recover iridium, like DONGSHENG, helps protect the world's advanced technology.
Many industrial products contain precious iridium. One common product is the iridium spark plug in high-end cars. For example: high-end BMW, Ford, Land Rover, Volvo, and Volkswagen cars. We can recover iridium from the spark plugs of these cars. Besides cars, luxury yachts and airplanes also have spark plugs for iridium recovery.
Iridium recovery from spark plugs has two big problems. First, spark plugs contain very little iridium. Usually only about 0.1 grams. Second, the electrodes are very small. This makes iridium recovery from spark plugs very inefficient. Because of this, few companies can recover iridium from spark plugs.
Whether from spark plugs, chemical catalysts, or electronic waste, the main problem is the same: there is very little iridium! In chemical catalysts, other metals also make purification hard. This makes iridium recovery costs even higher.
Iridium has more advantages. It resists corrosion very well. It also works well as an electrical catalyst. It is better at these things than almost all other precious metals! Iridium lasts about four times longer than nickel-based materials. It can also be made into very small parts. We can make super-fine electrodes less than 0.4mm in diameter. These fit into very precise equipment. Iridium mining, like platinum group metals, is mainly in South Africa and Russia. Also, iridium recovery is very hard to do. This makes the iridium supply chain weak.
