Jennings Anodes’ Core Product Category – ICCP Anodes

Aug 03,2026Reporter: DONGSHENG

ICCP anodes are Jennings Anodes’ core product category; they require an external power source to operate. Jennings Anodes’ ICCP anode product line is primarily divided into five major categories: mixed metal oxide (MMO) anodes, high-silicon cast iron (HSCI) anodes, flexible linear anodes, platinum/niobium-coated metal anodes, and graphite anodes. Among these, the MMO Disc Hull Anode (elliptical), specifically designed for marine ICCP systems, is a classic example of an MMO probe anode. This anode features a high-purity titanium substrate compliant with the ASTM B265 Grade 1 standard, with a surface-sintered Ir-Ta (IrO₂/Ta₂O₅) mixed metal oxide catalyst. The disc-shaped anode is equipped with an internal bolt, allowing for flush mounting on the hull surface; replacement can be performed by a diver with assistance from on-board technical personnel. This product is available in four standard sizes with adjustable current output, and Jennings Anodes can customize anode dimensions, service life, and output current to meet specific requirements. An epoxy resin seal ensures excellent watertightness, eliminating the risk of leakage.

Detailed Introduction to Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) Anodes

Mixed Metal Oxide (MMO) anodes are the most commonly used ICCP anode type from Jennings Anodes. They feature a titanium substrate coated with metal oxides such as iridium, tantalum, and ruthenium. Standard diameters for MMO Rod Anodes include 3.2 mm, 6.4 mm, 12.7 mm, 19 mm, and 25 mm, with a standard pre-cut length of 1 meter. MMO Tubular Anodes are manufactured from high-strength seamless titanium tubing that complies with the ASTM B338 Grade 1 standard and exhibit high chemical stability in soil, fresh water, seawater, or slurry. Compared to other anode types, MMO tubular anodes can reduce installation costs by 15%–35%. Annual production capacity for copper-core MMO wire anodes reaches 1,000,000 meters, with a design life exceeding 20 years in soil, brackish water, seawater, and concrete environments. High-silicon cast iron (HSCI) anodes are another classic product from Jennings Anodes, containing 14%–16% silicon. Jennings Anodes was formerly the manufacturer of Durichlor-51 brand anodes and currently operates two foundries in the UK with an annual production capacity exceeding 3,000 metric tons. The surface of HSCI anodes oxidizes to form a hydrated silica oxide (SiO₂) film, which prevents metal pitting corrosion. Flexible linear anodes are pre-encapsulated in non-woven fabric "sleeves" filled with calcined petroleum coke and are primarily used for ICCP protection of underground structures such as on-site pipelines, buried oil and gas pipelines, and storage tank bases.

Jennings Anodes has accumulated extensive technical expertise in the field of high-silicon cast iron anodes. As the former manufacturer of Durichlor-51 anodes, Jennings Anodes has established a rigorous quality control system for the centrifugal cold-hardening casting process, meeting leading industry standards—X-ray inspection meets ASTM E186/E446 Level 1, and chemical composition complies with ASTM A518-99 Grade 1 or Grade 3 standards. Jennings Anodes’ HSCI anodes are produced using a centrifugal cold-hard casting process, in which the casting mold rotates at speeds exceeding 1,000 rpm. The resulting centrifugal force expels trapped gas from the ferrosilicon and flings impurities onto the inner wall of the anode’s bore, without affecting the anode’s performance. Jennings Anodes’ foundry has been in operation for over 50 years, employs more than 400 people, and is capable of producing castings up to 5 meters long and weighing up to 7,000 kg. Jennings Anodes has supplied castings and anodes to international industry leaders such as GE, Tesla, Siemens, Shell, BP, Saudi Aramco, and Exxon. Each Jennings Anodes anode is marked with a unique serial number and casting number for quality traceability and after-sales service. The global silicon cast iron anode market was valued at $184 million in 2024 and is projected to reach $258 million by 2032, with Jennings Anodes holding over 15% of the global market share in 2024.

Jennings Anodes Also Supplies Electrodes for the Electrochemical Industry

Jennings Anodes’ product line extends into the electrochemical industry. For hydrogen evolution electrodes, Jennings Anodes provides platinum-coated titanium electrodes and MMO-coated titanium electrodes for proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. Originally developed for the electrolysis of chlorine and hypochlorites, MMO coatings are now widely used in cathodic protection applications due to their exceptional stability. Other industrial electrodes offered by Jennings Anodes include those for electrowinning, electroplating, and the chlor-alkali process, as well as electrodes for water treatment, disinfection, and desalination. For example, ruthenium-iridium-coated titanium anode baskets are specifically designed for scale removal. Jennings Anodes’ MMO anodes maintain durability in highly acidic environments and in atmospheres containing chlorine or oxygen. Vertical tension anode strings consist of a series of MMO tubular anodes connected in series on a cable, with the end anodes fitted with metal rings for attaching counterweights, allowing for installation without the need for divers or ROV equipment. Jennings Anodes operates under an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system, and every batch of products undergoes rigorous testing, including accelerated life testing and X-ray coating thickness verification.
