Components


The three-way catalytic converter is precisely constructed with four layers to work together to purify exhaust gases:

1. Shell: Made of stainless steel, it has anti-oxidation and anti-corrosion properties. Its main function is to protect the internal carrier and prevent carrier fragmentation or blockage caused by high-temperature deformation.

2. Vibration Damping Layer: Located between the housing and the carrier, it consists of expanded mica + alumina fiber padding or steel mesh padding. This layer secures the carrier with adhesive while providing sealing, thermal insulation, and vibration damping functions to prevent thermal expansion/contraction or mechanical impact damage to core components.

3. Carrier: The core features a honeycomb structure, with BMW original equipment typically using ceramic-based materials (some high-performance models use metal-based materials). The honeycomb design increases exhaust gas contact surface area to enhance catalytic efficiency. The mesh count (pore density) is typically 600 mesh for original equipment, while modified high-flow models (e.g., HJS, JBOM) reduce it to 200–300 mesh to minimize exhaust resistance.

4. Catalyst coating: The carrier surface is coated with catalytic materials composed of precious metals such as platinum (Pt), rhodium (Rh), and palladium (Pd). These metals trigger oxidation-reduction reactions at high temperatures, converting CO, HC, and NOx in exhaust gases into CO₂, H₂O, and N₂, respectively, to purify harmful substances.


Key Performance Parameters


The design parameters of BMW three-way catalytic converters directly impact emission control efficiency and durability:

Temperature Adaptability: The ignition temperature is 220°C (minimum temperature for catalytic activation), with a normal operating temperature range of 220–960°C. Some high-performance models (such as HJS metal catalytic converters) can withstand extreme exhaust temperatures of 1050°C, preventing high-temperature sintering failure.

Air-fuel ratio control: The air-fuel ratio of the mixture must be strictly controlled within the range of 13.8–15.1 in conjunction with the engine's electronic control system. Deviating from this range can significantly reduce catalytic efficiency.

Service life: The design service life exceeds 100,000 kilometers, but actual performance is influenced by fuel quality and combustion conditions. Prolonged use of low-quality fuel may cause catalyst poisoning due to sulfur or lead, leading to carrier blockage and requiring premature replacement.

Flow and Backpressure: The original 600-molybdenum ceramic carrier has high exhaust resistance, while modified versions (such as the MKL 300-molybdenum) reduce backpressure by lowering mesh count, improving high-RPM power response while maintaining compliance with National VI/Euro VI emission standards.

Installation Location: Located at the front section of the chassis exhaust manifold, it has a “long teapot” or “bulge” shape and is directly connected to the engine exhaust outlet for rapid heating.


Recycling Value and Influencing Factors


The value of used catalytic converters is almost entirely determined by the content of precious metals inside. BMW models have a higher recycling premium due to their higher precious metal load compared to ordinary vehicles:

1. Price Range

Premium for high-end vehicles: Approximately 30–40 yuan per pound for recycled parts, with whole unit recycling prices typically ranging from 70–550 yuan (e.g., Audi can reach 610 yuan), significantly higher than the 12–26 yuan per pound for standard models.


2. Influencing Factors

Vehicle Model and Engine Displacement: Catalytic converters from M-series or high-displacement models (e.g., BMW 530) are larger in size and contain higher precious metal content, enabling recycling prices to reach the upper limit.

Market Fluctuations: Precious metals are significantly influenced by global supply and demand dynamics as well as financial market conditions (e.g., rhodium prices surged due to supply shortages), necessitating monitoring of real-time market trends.

Condition Assessment: Catalytic converters that are unblocked and have intact carriers have higher recycling value; if they have failed due to poisoning, their value may decrease by more than half.
